Why Kudremukh Surprised Me More Than Any Trek This Year

Three things I got wrong about Kudremukh before going.

WRONG ASSUMPTION 1 — IT'S JUST ANOTHER WESTERN GHATS TREK

I'd done Kodachadri, Ballalarayana Durga, Kumara Parvatha. All Western Ghats. I assumed Kudremukh would be similar —dense forest, moderate trail, nice views.

It's different. The landscape opens up into high-altitudegrasslands that look nothing like typical Karnataka foresttreks. More like something from the northeast than South India. That surprised me completely.

WRONG ASSUMPTION 2 — PERMITS ARE EASY TO ARRANGE

I thought I'd sort it at the gate. You can't. Kudremukhis a protected national park and entry is regulated. Guide is mandatory. Timings are strict.

Before my second attempt I finally read properly aboutthe Kudremukh trek — entry rules, how to book guidein advance, what documents needed. Made all the
difference between getting turned back and actually completing the trail.

WRONG ASSUMPTION 3 — ONE DAY IS ENOUGH

Coming from Bangalore it's 6-7 hours minimum. Add 18-20km of trail. One day is not possible. Budget a full weekend — leave Friday night or Saturday early morning, stay overnight near base, return Sunday evening.

THE ACTUAL EXPERIENCE

Once everything was sorted — permits, guide, earlystart — the trek delivered completely. Grasslands at 1,800m elevation. No crowd. The horse-facepeak clearly visible. Clouds sitting below the ridgeline.

Worth every hour of planning and driving.

If you keep putting Kudremukh off because it feels complicated — it's not. It just needs preparation that most Karnataka treks don't require. Do that preparation and go.
